Dental implants are a 3-step process, but your free consultation requires only 1Request Appointment
The Dental Implant Process
Yes, it really is 3-steps in most cases.
1 Placing the implant
The dental implant, usually a cylindrical and/or tapered post made of titanium, is surgically placed into the jawbone.
2 Installing the abutment
Once the implant is settled in, your surgeon will then install a post known as an abutment into the implant.
Finally, Dr. Taglia Jr. will then create and connect the prosthetic tooth to the implants.
What can you expect?
To ensure the most stability and long-lasting results, placing dental implants can become a months-long process.
By taking time with the consultation and recovery, patients will capitalize on the benefits of dental implants in the long run with less complications.
We would like to go through the various steps of the dental implant process so you can fully understand what to expect.
The Dental Implant Process
It is a months-long process to get dental implants placed, but this is done to ensure the overall effectiveness and stability of treatment. By taking time with the consultation and recovery, patients will capitalize on the benefits of dental implants in the long run with less complications. We would like to go through the various steps of the dental implant process so you can fully understand what to expect.
The Implant Dentistry Consultation
The very first step of the process is a consultation with Dr. Taglia Jr.. During this consultation, an evaluation of your dental health will be performed to determine whether or not you are a candidate for dental implants. This assessment will include an exam of the health of your gums as well as the current condition of your jawbone. Sometimes, it may be necessary to perform a grafting or augmentation surgery in order to build up sufficient gum tissue or bone density.
The Oral Surgery
If you are deemed a good candidate for dental implants, the second step of the process will be the oral surgery. Patients will comfortably be placed under anesthesia to eliminate any pain or discomfort. During the surgery, the dental implants will then be anchored into your jawbone and gum tissue. Patients will be given a temporary dental restoration after the surgery as well as comprehensive instructions for post-operative care.
The Healing and Recovery Period
This step in the dental implants process might be the most crucial. While patients will be up and about shortly after surgery, the healing and recovery process for dental implants technically takes three to six months, and sometimes even up to a year. This is because osseointegration needs to take place.
Osseointegration is the process in which the dental implants fuse with the jawbone and gum tissue, making the implants bond with your mouth structure. Once the dental implants are properly joined with your bone and gum tissue, they will then be able to hold dental restorations in place as if they were natural tooth roots. It’s imperative that this healing process and recovery period is not to be rushed or sped up.
Placing the Permanent Dental Restoration
As soon as osseointegration is complete, patients will then return to Dr. Taglia Jr. to get their permanent dental restoration. These restorations will be crafted within a dental lab and will look as natural as possible, blending with your existing teeth.
